Background Solution

A Looming Crisis

John Hobday, founder and CEO of HCI, had a crisis that threatened the very existence of his company and mission. He had been working for three years to build CARES, HCI’s flagship training product, but had nothing to show for it but unworkable code. Now he was facing a two-month deadline to demonstrate a working product so his funding could continue.

Hard Decisions

John made the difficult choice to cut ties with his technical co-founder and turned to BlueEarth Innovation for a solution to his predicament. Given unworkable code to a broken platform with an impossible deadline, we certainly had our work cut out for us. This situation called for creative problem solving outside our standard development process.

Single-Minded Focus

BlueEarth triaged the existing code for anything we could use for the upcoming demo. A “minimum viable demo-able product” (MVDP) was identified: boil down ten learning modules into a single great one. This concentrated effort resulted in a compelling product demo that proved the value of John’s idea.

CARES 2.0

With a successful demo behind us and funding secured, we were able to completely rebuild the platform with a modern framework. The new code was streamlined, had fewer dependencies, and was stable enough for HCI’s instructional designers to create content for the platform, even as we continued to build it.

An Evolving Platform

Today there are seven flavors of CARES, including a “white label” version that other institutions use for their own internal training. Newer features such as purchasing, accounting, and certification have added even greater value.

Built to Last

CARES has been a successful, industry-leading product for nearly a decade, and the lasting technologies we’ve developed for HCI continue to make us proud. To this day, John credits BlueEarth with saving his company.
